The Philadelphia Phillies are preparing for Saturday’s matchup against the Miami Marlins as they aim to extend their recent hot streak to five consecutive wins. The team has not lost since the departure of former manager Rob Thomson earlier in the week, and early signs under interim manager Don Mattingly suggest a positive response from the clubhouse.
One of the key contributors during this improved stretch has been rookie outfielder Justin Crawford, who has begun to show encouraging signs of consistency at the plate. The 22-year-old has been on a five-game hitting streak, going 7-for-20 during that span. His recent production includes two extra-base hits and three runs batted in, highlighting his growing comfort at the Major League level.
Overall, Crawford has posted a .269 batting average, a .340 on-base percentage, and a .716 OPS across 28 games this season. While he has yet to record his first Major League home run, his impact has been felt in other ways, particularly through his speed on the bases and his strong defensive presence in center field. Those attributes have made him a valuable piece in the Phillies’ outfield rotation and an important part of their long-term plans.
Crawford was initially listed in Saturday’s starting lineup, penciled in to bat seventh while starting in center field. However, the Phillies made a late adjustment just hours before first pitch, removing him from the lineup entirely. The change prompted a reshuffling of the outfield alignment, with Adolis García moving to center field, Félix Reyes shifting to right field, and Garrett Stubbs stepping in to play left field.
Shortly after the update, the organization provided clarification on the situation. According to reports from Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Crawford was scratched due to a migraine. The team described the decision as precautionary, prioritizing the player’s health over his availability for the game.
At this stage, it remains uncertain whether Crawford will be available off the bench in Saturday’s contest. However, given the unpredictable and often debilitating nature of migraines, the Phillies are expected to handle his recovery carefully. The more realistic expectation is that he could return to action in Sunday’s series finale, assuming his condition improves.
Despite the setback, Crawford continues to be viewed as a significant part of Philadelphia’s future. Drafted 17th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft, he arrived in the organization with high expectations due to his athleticism, defensive ability, and offensive upside. After spending time developing in the minors, he is now beginning to earn more consistent opportunities at the big-league level in 2026.
His emergence comes at an important time for the Phillies, who currently sit at 13–19 and are trying to climb back into contention in the National League East. While the team has shown signs of improvement recently, sustained success will depend in part on the continued development and health of young players like Crawford.
For now, Philadelphia will look to keep its winning streak alive against Miami while adjusting its lineup in his absence, hoping their rookie outfielder can return soon and continue his promising start to the season.
