The Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles entered their four-game series this week knowing that adjustments would play a major role in determining success. The clubs opened the series Monday night in Baltimore and are set to continue their matchup Tuesday, with both teams dealing with roster changes and injury concerns.
Seattle will be without veteran shortstop J.P. Crawford throughout the series after the club placed him on the 10-day injured list because of a right-hand contusion. Crawford suffered the injury when he was struck by a pitch during Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers. Mariners manager Dan Wilson explained that the decision to place Crawford on the injured list was made with his long-term health in mind, noting that it was the most sensible course of action.

The Mariners managed to secure a 6-3 victory in Monday’s opener, thanks largely to a grand slam from Josh Naylor. The win improved Seattle’s recent stretch after the club had cooled off following an eight-game winning streak. Since that streak ended, the Mariners have gone 2-3, but they were encouraged by the way they responded in the first game of the series.
Seattle’s lineup was also impacted by the absence of rookie infielder Colt Emerson. Emerson had been filling in at shortstop over the weekend but was scratched from Monday’s lineup due to back tightness. To help fill the void created by Crawford’s injury, the Mariners recalled infielder Ryan Bliss from Triple-A. Bliss contributed immediately, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly during the series opener. He started at second base while Cole Young shifted over to shortstop.
Young has been one of Seattle’s most reliable players this season, and Wilson praised the young infielder’s ability to handle a demanding workload. According to the manager, Young has done an excellent job maintaining his energy and performance despite being relied upon heavily throughout the season.
Meanwhile, Baltimore is looking to regroup after suffering its third consecutive loss. Although the Orioles created several scoring opportunities in Monday’s game, they were unable to capitalize when it mattered most. Interim manager Craig Albernaz expressed pride in his team’s effort, emphasizing that the players battled throughout the game and consistently pressured Seattle’s pitching staff. However, he acknowledged that Baltimore lacked the timely hit needed to change the outcome.
The Orioles have also experienced some costly mistakes on the basepaths recently. One notable error occurred when Blaze Alexander attempted to advance aggressively and was thrown out at second base after tagging up from first. The play erased a potential run and became a key moment in the game. Albernaz appreciated the team’s willingness to play aggressively but stressed the importance of making smarter decisions in those situations.
Tuesday’s pitching matchup features Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert against Baltimore left-hander Trevor Rogers. Gilbert enters the game with a 4-4 record and a 3.79 ERA while riding a streak of strong road performances. He has not allowed a run in his last three road starts, covering 17 2/3 innings against the Athletics, Royals, and White Sox while recording 21 strikeouts.
Rogers, meanwhile, carries a 3-6 record and a 6.29 ERA. He is coming off one of his best outings of the season after allowing only one run over 5 2/3 innings in a victory over Boston. Both pitchers will look to provide stability as their teams continue a series that could have significant implications moving forward.
