Astros Receive Encouraging Christian Javier Update as Hunter Brown Nears Return
The Houston Astros could soon receive a pair of important boosts to their pitching staff as right-handers Christian Javier and Hunter Brown continue progressing toward returns from injury. Ahead of Tuesday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers, the organization provided a positive update on Javier’s recovery while preparing to welcome Brown back from the injured list.
According to reports, Brown is expected to be activated before Tuesday’s game, giving Houston another much-needed arm in its rotation. Meanwhile, Javier is also moving closer to a return, with the Astros targeting a late June comeback for the veteran starter. As part of his rehabilitation process, Javier is scheduled to make another rehab appearance on Tuesday, an important step as he works his way back to the Major League roster.
Javier’s recovery has been closely monitored after shoulder issues limited him early in the season. The 29-year-old made only three starts before being sidelined in April, continuing a frustrating stretch in which injuries have repeatedly interrupted his availability. Despite showing flashes of top-level talent throughout his career, staying healthy has become one of the biggest challenges for the talented right-hander.
The Astros know how valuable Javier can be when he is at his best. Over the years, he has demonstrated the ability to miss bats, pitch effectively in high-pressure situations, and contribute in both the regular season and postseason. However, injuries have prevented him from establishing the consistency that made him one of Houston’s most promising starters.
In fact, Javier has not been able to make more than eight starts in a season since 2023. The recurring health setbacks have limited his opportunities to build momentum and provide stability within the Astros’ starting rotation. As a result, Houston has had to rely heavily on other pitchers to fill important innings throughout the year.
The Astros’ pitching staff has been tested by injuries for much of the season. Several key contributors have missed time, forcing the organization to shuffle its rotation and bullpen on multiple occasions. While the club has managed to remain competitive despite those challenges, the lack of consistency has played a role in its uneven performance.
Houston enters this stage of the season with a 33-41 record, placing the team fourth in the American League West standings. Although that record is below expectations for a franchise that has become accustomed to contending for division titles, the Astros remain very much within striking distance of first place.
The gap between Houston and the division-leading Seattle Mariners stands at only 4.5 games, leaving plenty of time for the Astros to make a move up the standings. The potential returns of Brown and Javier could significantly improve those chances. Both pitchers possess the talent to strengthen the rotation and provide the club with a much-needed boost during the second half of the season.
For now, Houston’s immediate attention is focused on its series against Detroit. The Astros entered Tuesday looking to bounce back after suffering a difficult 9-3 loss to the Tigers on Monday. With Brown expected to rejoin the roster and Javier continuing to make progress, the organization has reason to believe better days may be ahead.
If both pitchers can return healthy and perform at a high level, Houston’s hopes of climbing back into the American League West race could become a reality. Their recoveries may ultimately play a major role in determining how the Astros’ season unfolds.
